Carroll Parrott Blue

Carroll Parrott Blue is an award-winning filmmaker, author and interactive multimedia producer. Currently a research professor at the University of Houston’s Center for Public History and the Texas Learning & Computation Center, her non-profit organization, The Dawn Project, uses community-based media training, production and distribution techniques for citizen engagement in neighborhood development. Blue’s television programs include “NOVA” (“Mystery of the Senses: Vision,” 2007), “Smithsonian World” (“Nigerian Arts-Kindred Spirits,” 1996), “Conversations with Roy DeCarava” (1983) and “Varnette’s World: A Study of a Young Artist” (1979). As an author, Blue blends text, stills, graphics and moving images in traditional and new media formats. Her interactive multimedia project, “The Dawn at My Back: Memoir of a Black Texas Upbringing,” is a combination book, DVD-ROM, and website. In 2004, the American Library Association selected “Dawn” as one of the 30 best American Association of University Press publications, and it won the 2004 Sundance Online Film Festival Jury Award. Her other multimedia works include the Third Ward “StoryMapping” Project, “The Third Ward Online Tour” website and The Dubai-Orlando Project. A San Diego State University Emeritus Professor, Blue is also retired from a professorship at the University of Central Florida. Her specialties include Documentary Film, American Independent Cinema, African American Cinema and Digital Media Community-Based Applications. In 2007, she was appointed a World Academy of Art and Science Fellow.
