Cléo from 5 to 7
France, 1961
Fortunes, omens and superstitions pervade the hours that Cléo (Corinne Marchand), a famous singer, wanders through her life and the streets of Paris awaiting the results of a medical test that could bring dire news. Though her second feature ostensibly unfolds in real time, writer-director Agnès Varda also draws us into the more ambiguous, interior moments of the young and beautiful Cléo’s confrontation with mortality and meaning. As she seeks distraction and solace from the people she encounters, Michel Legrand’s score of swirling and plucked strings keeps existential, and decidedly modern, time.
35mm, b&w, 90 min. Director: Agnès Varda. Screenwriter: Agnès Varda. With: Corinne Marchand, Antoine Bourseiller, Dominique Davray.
