They Shall Not Grow Old (U.K./New Zealand, 2018)
In partnership with Hollywood Post 43 of the American Legion and the UCLA Film & Television Archive Board, the Archive presents a special screening of director Peter Jackson’s new documentary on the First World War, They Shall Not Grow Old (2018). The film, which has garnered rave reviews, is an amazing achievement, made possible by new digital technology which turns grainy, silent, black and white newsreel footage into a color sound film. It seemingly takes the viewer into the real world as it existed in 1914 to 1918. In that sense, it is not a documentary per se, but rather an aesthetic reimagining of what the human experience of the First World War was for ordinary British soldiers at the front in France.
