In Southern India, judicial oversight is traditionally practiced by the “Jamaat,” an all-male body, dispensing justice based on Islamic Sharia law. The presence of women is not allowed—even to defend themselves. Deepa Dhanraj’s inspiring documentary profiles a women’s Jamaat, organized in 2004, whose influence has spread to 12 districts, empowering women and holding authorities to account for authentic justice.
