Directed by Robert Greenwald
More or less the apotheosis of disco on film, the delirious, hyper-produced Xanadu presents the story of a frustrated artist, inspired by supernatural “muse” Olivia Newton-John to become a roller disco entrepreneur. Offering a very different dramatic setup from that of Car Wash (where the dilemma was getting into a disco at all), the film sold a new fantasy for the 1980s: high-rolling success.
