The Lickerish Quartet (Italy/German Federal Republic, 1970)

The Lickerish Quartet (1970)
June 2, 2011 - 7:30 pm
In-person:
Radley Metzger.

Digitally restored extended version!

Directed by Radley Metzger

Opening with a line from Pirandello—“All this present reality of yours is fated to seem a mere illusion to you tomorrow”—director Radley Metzger’s enigmatic masterpiece The Lickerish Quartet shares thematic and structural elements with Joseph Losey’s The Go-Between, released the same year. True, Metzger quickly follows up his literary allusion with scenes from a stag film, but as an aristocratic family—father, mother and son—seeks ever more erotic thrills, their hungry desire triggers a chain reaction of repressed memories and buried secrets that seems to bend time and space. Surreal and sensual with stunningly lavish production design, The Lickerish Quartet is presented here in a digital restored, extended director’s cut.

Producer: Radley Metzger. Screenwriter: Michael DeForrest. Cinematographer: Hans Jura. Editor: Amedeo Salfa. Cast: Silvana Venturelli, Frank Wolff, Erika Remberg, Paolo Turco.

Blu-ray, color, 90 min.
