Title:

"Working to end gang violence in East Los Angeles"

Date:
September 20, 1978

Synopsis

Gang violence is on the rise in East Los Angeles after years of relative quiet, and the area now has the highest gang homicide rate in the nation. Most people involved in gang crimes never end up in prison, but the California Youth Authority, police and courts are doing everything they can to change that. Reporter Tony Valdez interviews Charles Pineda Jr. of the California Youth Authority about how they are working to eliminate the gang warfare, and the reasons that people join gangs in the first place. Valdez also interviews former gang members about their experiences in gangs and why they are now working with young people to keep them out of gangs. Footage includes shots of streets, graffiti, possible gang members out and about on the streets and a group of people meeting around a table.

Note: The KTLA newsfilm collection at UCLA consists of cut and unedited stories, outtakes and fill footage, originally shot on 16mm reversal film stock with magnetic soundtrack. Some footage, particularly material not used for broadcast, may be without sound.
