Title:

"United Farm Workers march in Calexico"

Date:
May 5, 1971

Synopsis

In September of 1970, United Farm Workers asked consumers to boycott all head lettuce that had not been picked by members of the UFW. This was an attempt to put pressure on the major lettuce growers to recognize the UFW as the bargaining unit for farm workers. This silent footage covers a march in support of farm workers taking place in Calexico, California. Shots include a group of people with UFW flags and signs (in both English and Spanish), different men addressing the crowd, and the crowd applauding. There are also shots of the actual march in which the demonstrators walk past the camera in a single file line while carrying signs, and flags, including the American flag, the Mexican flag and the UFW flag.

Note:  The KTLA newsfilm collection at UCLA consists of cut and unedited stories, outtakes and fill footage, originally shot on 16mm reversal film stock with magnetic soundtrack. Some footage, particularly material not used for broadcast, may be without sound.
