Title:

"Pico-Union community protests eviction of families"

Date:
August 8, 1979

Synopsis

A group of people, including young children, protest the eviction of families and small businesses in the Pico-Union neighborhood by carrying signs, marching, and chanting in both English and Spanish. A representative from Coalition for Economic Survival, a countywide community organization, talks about the reasons for the protest and how the coalition has helped the community organize to make their voices heard. According to her, twenty-six families and eleven small businesses are being evicted from their community so the city can buy the property with HUD money and in turn sell the property to Pep Boys. They believe removing homes during a housing crisis to benefit big business is unconscionable and they intend to fight it. One protester interviewed talks about people being displaced and the economic hardship of finding new housing.
