Channel 5 has been running a series on Chicano gangs in Los Angeles and this material complements that series. Reporter Jan Mitagawa interviews Mr. Rios about the community service organization, Barrio Brothers, and the ways in which the organization can help decrease gang activity and gang violence in the barrios. The goal is to help develop inter-barrio programs and relationships to get people from the community involved in a common cause. Mr. Rios believes it will work because their method, unlike others, such as building up police image, involves the people directly affected by the problem. The footage includes shots of a Barrio Brothers billboard and bumper sticker.
Note: The KTLA newsfilm collection at UCLA consists of cut and unedited stories, outtakes and fill footage, originally shot on 16mm reversal film stock with magnetic soundtrack. Some footage, particularly material not used for broadcast, may be without sound.
