Andrew Young was appointed to serve as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations in 1977. In 1979, he resigned after misleading the State Department about an unauthorized meeting with representatives of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. In this clip, Mayor Tom Bradley holds a press conference regarding Young’s conference call to the mayors of six U.S. cities (including Bradley) to explain to them the circumstances of his resignation. In the phone call, Young wanted to make it clear he strongly supports Carter and will assist in the re-election efforts. He also expressed his wishes that the mayors get this information out to their constituents to avoid any misunderstandings that could create a schism between the black and Jewish communities. Bradley also responds to questions from reporters.
