LA Rebellion filmmaker Julie Dash recently made Indiewire's list of "Trail-Blazing Black Female Directors."
In light of director Ava Duvernay's recent success with her film Middle of Nowhere, the article called attention to the previous achievements of black female filmmakers, citing Dash for gaining the first theatrical release of a film directed by an African American female, as well being nominated for a DGA award. It is the achievements of filmmakers like Dash that paved the way for a new generation.
